She Was Here: Tracing My 4th Great-Grandmother Beyond 1870

This presentation follows a ten-year genealogical journey, using online resources, oral history, and physical documents to connect with an African American 4th-great-grandmother hidden in the family history for generations.

Dr. Charlotte Young is a retired educator with 28 years of experience as a teacher, principal, director, and assistant superintendent. She earned both a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees from Jackson State University and a PhD from Mississippi State University.

For more than 25 years, Dr. Young has been passionate about uncovering her ancestral roots and preserving  her family’s history. Her research includes exploring census records, probate records, wills, and other historical documents, as well as interviewing family elders to preserve their oral histories. She is always searching for new ways to connect the pieces of the past and transform historical records into living stories for future generations.

Dr. Young lives in Brandon with her husband, Chris. She is the proud mother of two sons, Chris Jr. and William, and grandmother of Jaxon and Shaw.
